Finally! Some snow!

 Yesterday finally brought some relief to the dry spell we have experienced in Denver.  This system brought 4.5" of snow, with a moisture content of 0.24". 

Although this was a dry, powdery snow, it is better than nothing.  Right now, we'll take any moisture we can get.

Bring on the Lenticulars

Courtesy of the stacked lenticular clouds, we enjoyed a gorgeous sunset here in Denver this evening.  These clouds can tell us that a change is coming, as these are caused by the jet stream flowing over the mountains.
  

This is why I love Colorado... We can see so much variety in weather patterns and cloud formations.  It's the best laboratory a meteorologist can have.  

All we need now is some moisture.  However, with a strong La Nina pattern in place, we are experiencing the typical effects.  Here on the Colorado Front Range, we experience warmer than normal temperatures with below average precipitation.  In the mountains, on the other side of the divide, they get the moisture along with near normal temps.  That's great news for the ski resorts, as they are reporting as having excellent early season conditions.  This is not only good for the state's economy, but we get the much needed snowpack as well!

Colorful sunrises... and more!

There's nothing like waking up to a gorgeous, picturesque sunrise.  Seems like when I see colors like this first thing in the morning, it makes my whole day function on a positive note. 

When there's no significant weather to talk about, what better than to share the smiles that come from seeing a sunrise like this.  Hopefully, in the next week, we will have something to talk about.  Until then, high pressure dominates and there's nothing but nice weather here.

From Fall to Winter...

This weekend finally saw the opening of our ski resorts.  Loveland Basin opened earlier this morning, with A-Basin opening tomorrow.  As much as I would love to be there for opening day, I cannot.  Perhaps next weekend, after this week's exams are done. 

This Fall is showing many beautiful colors if advance of the winter season to come.  I don't remember the colors being this vibrant for some time.

Looking west, I see the clouds hovering in the mountains.  Up there above 9000', they are getting some much needed snow.  Winter Storm Warnings and Advisories are out for much of the mountains, with many areas expected to receive 10"-18" of snow! 

Ahhhh... the views one can wake up to!  Have a great week everyone!



Here Comes the Rain...

Finally, it looks like our dry spell is coming to an end (at least for now).  It's a pleasant sight to see the Cumulus forming, knowing that the rain isn't too far away.  We desperately need the moisture, not only for the vegetation, but also to settle all the junk that's been floating around in the air. 

The mountains are also looking at their first real snowfall of the season.  The ski resorts have yet to open, because temperatures have been unseasonably warm.  Hopefully next Friday, one of them will open.  I'm ready to go down the hill and play in the snow.  Now, to pray for La Nina to at least bless the mountains with lots of snow!

Good evening all!

This is the birth of my first blogspot. There's so much I want to do, but mostly, I want to share my weather experiences and research with those I know, or who may have similar interests. 

Not only do I plan on sharing my summer chase experiences, but I also want to share the beautiful sights that a Colorado winter has to offer.  Let's not stop there, I enjoy all aspects of the weather, and that's what you'll see here.

I need to close for now, but let me close with my favorite sunset picture of recent, and as my homework load allows, I will be adding to this as warranted.
